Palazzo Schifanoiais one of the most fascinating buildings in Ferrara, constructed in 1385 as anEste “Delizia”(pleasure palace) by Alberto V d’Este. It was a residence intended for the rest and leisure of the Este court. The name itself, “Schifanoia,” derives from the verb “schifar,” meaning “to shun boredom” (schivar la noia), which signified escaping the pressure of political duties, thus emphasizing its function as a place of pleasure and relaxation.

The “Hall of the months” and the frescoes

In the 15th century, DukeBorso d’Esteextended the palace and commissioned the famousSalone dei Mesi(Hall of the Months), an extraordinary cycle offrescoescreated by artists from the Ferrarese school, includingFrancesco del CossaandErcole de’ Roberti. These frescoes celebrate the Duke’s good governance and depict mythological and astrological scenes of great artistic value.

During the rule ofErcole I d’Este, the palace underwent further modifications, with the addition of a terracotta cornice and the expansion of the structure. After theDevolution of Ferrarain 1598, the palace passed to several noble families, including theCybo-Malaspinaand theTassoni. Many artists and painters participated in the creation of this palace over time.
