TheNational Archaeological Museum of Ferrarais one of the most fascinating museums in Italy. It is housed inPalazzo Costabili, a Renaissance building traditionally attributed to Ludovico il Moro, but which actually belonged toAntonio Costabili, a prominent figure in the Este court.

The Etruscan Legacy in Spina

The museum houses artifacts recovered from the excavations of the Etruscan city ofSpinaand over 4,000 tombs from its necropolises. Spina was a major commercial port that flourished between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC. Among the most significant pieces are the splendidAttic red-figure ceramics, bronze objects, andgold and amber jewelry, which bear witness to the strong cultural ties between Spina and Greece.

The exhibition is spread across two floors: the ground floor is dedicated to thesettlement of Spina and daily life, while the main floor (piano nobile) displays thefunerary objectsfrom the necropolis. The museum also features theValle Isola Dugout Canoes(Piroghe di Valle Isola), single-log boats dating back to the 3rd-4th century BC, offering a fascinating glimpse into Etruscan navigation.

Also highly recommended is a visit to“The Garden of the Gods”(Il Giardino degli Dei), a beautiful Renaissance green space complete with a labyrinth, pergola, and rose garden.
