TheTeatro Comunale di Ferrara, today dedicated to Claudio Abbado, is the city’s main theater and a significant example of Italian theatrical architecture. Its official name is preciselyTeatro Comunale Claudio Abbado. The general director isMoni Ovadia, the artistic director isMarcello Corvino, and the president of the Foundation isMichele Placido.
Its construction began in, based on a design by architectsAntonio FoschiniandCosimo Morelli, and was completed in.
Ferrara already boasted a long theatrical tradition, with several private theaters managed by noble families. However, at the end of the 18th century, the city’s growingpushed for the creation of a larger and more prestigious. The project was commissioned by Cardinal Legate Borghese.
The theater, located onCorso Martiri della Libertà, near theEstense Castle, features a-shaped auditorium withof boxes and a gallery, seating approximately. A distinctive element is theRotonda Foschini(Foschini Rotunda), a circular internal structure that connects different parts of the building.

Over the centuries, the theatre has hosted prose, opera, and dance performances, becoming a cultural landmark for the city. In 2014, it was dedicated to the memory of the great conductor Claudio Abbado, who had a strong connection to Ferrara.
